Placement Testing

Students can schedule on-campus placement testing using the link above. We are currently only administering the placement exam for Hennepin Tech students. We do not test students with placement test vouchers from other schools.

Remote Accuplacer placement testing is available in reading comprehension and mathematics. You can complete your placement test from your own home or office using Meazure Learning Proctor U.

To test remotely, you will need access to a computer that has a working webcam and microphone as your test session will be recorded and reviewed by a proctor.

Our Remote Placement Test Process

1. Submit a Placement Test Voucher Request. Not everyone will need to complete placement testing, so we strongly encourage you to first meet with a Student Success Advisor to create a Placement Test Plan tailored and considerate of your previously completed coursework, test scores, and earned grade point average (high school or college).
2. Once you submit the voucher request form, please allow 1 to 2 business days to receive an email from CollegeBoard/Accuplacer containing your coucher code and registration link.
3. Follow the instructions outlined in the email, including creating an account with ProctorU if you haven’t used this platform in the past, verifying computer requirements, and scheduling your testing appointment.

Students have the option to complete the computer literacy and/or the keyboarding placement tests remotely using Zoom. To schedule an appointment and learn more about the remote testing requirements please use the above remote computer literacy link.

You may not need to test if you meet one of the following criteria:

3. Completed an ACCUPLACER Math test within the last two years, or completed ACCUPLACER Reading and/or Sentence Skills tests within the last five years.

   Please email ACCUPLACER score results to Registrar@HennepinTech.edu.

4. Completed approved prerequisites at another college for the English and Math courses in which you plan to enroll, and you received grades of "C" or higher in the prerequisites.

   An official/unofficial copy of your transcript with the prerequisites must be submitted to Hennepin Technical College, and the courses must be approved by the college to satisfy prerequisite requirements; Math prerequisites must have been completed in the last two years.

Our Testing Centers are able to offer services to students who require reasonable accommodations for testing. Please follow the procedures outlined below.

1. Complete the Accuplacer Test Accommodations Request form. While you complete this form, be prepared to upload documentation of your disability (i.e., IEP, psych evaluation, doctor’s letter, etc.)
2. You will receive a confirmation email from Access Services staff.
3. After you've received your confirmation email from Access Services, schedule your placement test.
4. On the day of your placement test appointment, bring a photo ID with you.

Students are strongly encouraged to devote as much time possible to prepare for placement testing. This applies whether you are taking a placement test for the first time or if you are retaking an exam. Proper preparation and study time usually leads to higher test scores. Higher test scores can help reduce (or eliminate) the need to take additional developmental courses and can save both time and money.

The purpose of the computer-based assessment test is to provide you and the college with information about your current academic skill levels in reading, writing, mathematics, and computer literacy. This will help you select appropriate courses, plan a course of study with your Counselor or Academic Advisor, and identify which student services you might want to utilize during your journey.

Reading assesses four broad knowledge and skills categories:

• Information and Ideas
• Rhetoric
• Synthesis
• Vocabulary

The Reading test assesses your ability to derive meaning from a range of texts and to determine the meaning of words and phrases in short and extended contexts. Passages on the test cover a range of content areas, writing modes, and complexities. Both single and paired passages are included.

1. Arithmetic assesses the following knowledge and skills:

2. Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics assesses the following knowledge and skills:

   • Descriptive Statistics

Computer Skills Proficiency (CSP) test is a literacy exam assessing three broad knowledge and skill categories :

• Word Processing
• File Management
• Information and Communication

The CSP test is untimed and comprised of 30 questions- a combination of multiple choice and task-oriented simulation questions. Some of the topics, concepts and functions students can potentially see in the exam include:

• Basic computer information and operations
• Text editing
• Working with icons
• Working with Windows
• Managing files, directories, and folders
• Creating, saving, opening, editing, and formatting documents
• Inserting, selecting, editing, formatting, duplicating, moving, and deleting text within documents
• Mail merging
• Using web browsers, accessing and navigating web pages, activating hyperlinks/images, organizing bookmarks

Within an academic year, students can take each placement test required for their program twice. Any additional retesting beyond this policy must first be approved by a Student Success Advisor or Counselor.

Upon completion of the placement test, you'll receive a printed copy of your test scores. You'll then be able to meet or schedule a time to meet with your Student Success Advisor to discuss your scores and register for classes.

• Earned qualifying high school GPA of 2.6 for reading comprehension waiver
• Earned a qualifying high school GPA of 2.8 or higher in combination with a high school transcript showing a C or better in Algebra 2. Please submit high school transcript for test waivers to Transfer@HennepinTech.edu.
