Student balances work and study in engineering field
Brooklyn Park, Jan. 27, 2021 – Mikaela Acevedo wasn’t always so certain about how to navigate college. At first, with plans to study mechanical engineering, she enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She joined a sorority, participated in campus clubs and enjoyed the university. But, Acevedo realized the financial burden was too stressful and she decided to transfer to a new college.
Because Hennepin Technical College (HTC) offers programs in engineering technology fields, Acevedo explored the options and decided on the Manufacturing Engineering Technologies program with a concentration in Fluid Power Engineering and Motion Control.
“I enjoy the hands-on learning of a technical college. I have the chance to do the career before I make a commitment to it. That way, I know if I’ll enjoy it,” said Acevedo.
A Fluid Power instructor at HTC connected her with a job in her field of study. A local company that repairs 3-D printers hired Acevedo as an entry-level employee. Soon, she increased her confidence and abilities on the job and was moved into a new area.
“I work in the electrical area and build the boxes. I really think of it as my baby. Since I started, I now do more with the machines and assembly of parts which means more responsibility,” said Acevedo. “I have the chance to put my toe in the water for manufacturing while I’m a student. It’s a great job.”
Her ultimate career goal is to work in product development and she plans to earn a four-year degree.
“You never know until you try. There are so many opportunities so go for it.”
Acevedo is a student leader on campus. She works on the Student Experience Team (SET) which helps facilitate events on campus. SET members are also available to meet students during their weekly office hours to answer questions about Hennepin Technical College (HTC). They are available at both campus locations in Room F140 the Student Life Center.
