Grad thanks TRIO for helping him earn his degree
Brooklyn Park, June 7, 2023 – On graduation day, business graduate Samuel Koheneh was proud to wear his cap, gown and a bright red sash with the word TRIO on it.
TRIO is a federal program that provides academic and many support services to students who need additional help. Students may be accepted into the TRIO program if they have at least one of these criteria: first-generation students, students with disabilities and financially disadvantages students.
We asked Koheneh how TRIO assisted him while attending Hennepin Tech.
Hennepin Tech: Tell us about yourself.
Koheneh: I’m from Liberia originally. I’ll be returning to Africa now to visit and then when I return, I’ll be searching for a new job.
Hennepin Tech: What obstacles did you face as a student?
Koheneh: I have two kids, age five and age two. I was also working full-time while attending college. And you are correct, I didn’t get much sleep!
Hennepin Tech: That’s a lot to juggle. How did TRIO help you?
Koheneh: It was so helpful. I appreciate all the staff. I would not be here today without TRIO. They have really been there for us. They helped me from beginning to end. The staff helped me with my tuition because they assisted me with applying for a scholarship.
Hennepin Tech: What are your plans for the future?
Koheneh: I will continue my education and get a four-year degree. I’ll start classes in the fall at Metro State. I hope to get a job in business management.
