Eden Prairie, MN — February 11, 2026 — Students in Hennepin Technical College’s Automation Robotics Engineering Technology (ARET) program took the spotlight at a recent Reverse Career Fair, an unconventional event where students interview employers instead of the other way around. The event, part of a hands-on, industry-engaged experience, gives students a platform to demonstrate real skills and connect directly with potential employers.
During the fair, ARET students shared their knowledge in programming, troubleshooting and hands-on automation applications, the very skills they learn through their coursework as part of this in-demand manufacturing and engineering field. In the industry today, automation technicians design, build, install and maintain automated systems used across manufacturing, packaging and supply chains.
Students also highlighted the value of being active in the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IOPP) student club and its Lunch and Learn sessions with local employers, offered about once per semester. These gatherings give club members an inside look at what industry partners are seeking in their next generation of talent.
“Meeting the people from industry at the IOPP Lunch and Learn sessions helps club members understand what an employer is looking for when they’re hiring,” said club member Josiah Busby. “It gives us a huge leg-up when we’re looking for our internships and jobs.” Josiah, who is on track to graduate this spring, is gearing up for a summer internship at Boston Scientific and credits his participation in IOPP and the Reverse Career Fair with strengthening his confidence and professional connections.
Current interns Will and Micky, who are gaining real-world experience at Delkor Systems, echoed Josiah’s enthusiasm, mentioning the value of having regular industry feedback from the program advisory committee, helping to keep their program relevant and providing additional experience through the student club.
The Reverse Career Fair and IOPP activities help bridge classroom learning and career readiness, giving ARET students additional opportunities to showcase their talent, grow their networks and accelerate their transition from student to skilled professional.
